History and Terroir of Chateau Haut-Vigneau

Situated in the commune of Martillac, this property was originally part of the estate belonging to Baron de Montesquieu.

In 1765, Belleyme, the royal geographer, published a map on which the site “Vigneau de haut” appears clearly planted with vines; today, this property belongs to Eric Perrin from the same family that owns the famous Chateau Carbonnieux. Beginning in the 1980s, he began the long-term work of clearing the land and replanting a vineyard from scratch. With its remarkable situation, its choice terroir, and careful work in both vineyard and winery, Château Haut-Vigneau will soon be playing in the big leagues.

The property is situated in the commune of Martillac. Its 20 hectares produce a red wine typical of its Pessac-Léognan appellation.

With oenological advice from Christophe Olivier and Denis Dubourdieu, Eric Perrin strives to produce a truly classic great wine, expressing both the power and the finesse of its fruit.

Winemaking at Haut-Vigneau is based on a great respect for its grapes (60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot) and terroir (deep Garonnaise gravel), together with careful and traditional aging (in 20% new barrels).

This wine has received 2 local media reviews , firstly from Winsor Dobbin  "It's not easy to track down Bordeaux that is both affordable and drinkable, but this one fits the bill; doing a good job with dinner and then later in the evening as a companionable partner while watching football. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot from the commune of Martillac in Pessac-Leognan, this is a classic, stylish Bordeaux red produced by Eric Perrin, whose family also owns Chateau Carbonnieux. Made from relatively young vines, it has both power and finesse with dark berry flavours and some hints of toasty oak from up to 18 months in barrel. Definitely one for the cellar."

And from Sean Mitchell " Much has been written on the 2009 Bordeaux vintage, it being largely universally regarded as among the great Bordeaux vintages. This too from a decade in Bordeaux that has already seen a number of already outstanding vintages (2000, 2001, 2003 (for some producers) and 2005). I am therefore somewhat excited to see some 2009s starting to find their way to Australian shores. This wine did not disappoint. The 2009 vintage of Chateau Haut‐Vigneau presents itself as a typical Graves wine in many respects, and is a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. Ruby in colour, the wine opens to a medium‐pronounced intensity expression of blackcurrant, cigar box, black cherry and a sprinkling of popcorn kernels. On the palate, the depth of the vintage becomes apparent ‐ a mouth filling full bodied wine with medium length, forward black fruits, tobacco, and medium tannins and acidity. It immediately drank well, yet with time, I liked it even more. This is a very good wine, happily also at a very fair price. 89-90 points

Soil:  Gravel.

Wine making:  Grapes are harvested by hand.  Fermentation occurs over 20 days in stainless steel vats.  The wine is aged in oak barrels for 15-18 months.

Cellaring potential:  10 years. (2012-2014)

Our Tasting notes: The result is a wine with very pleasing aromas of black fruits (blackberries, black currant), red fruits (raspberries) and subtle roasted notes (grilled and smoky). Good fruit weight and fine gravel tannins giving it a lovely mouth feel. Hints of minerals and chocolate.

Typifies the silky tannins, minerals and structure of the wines of Pessac-Leognan.
