Product Description

Amiral de Beychevelle is the second wine of Château Beychevelle, one of the finest châteaux and producers in the Médoc.  The château is situated on the banks of the Gironde.  During the 16th century it was owned by the Duc d’Epernon, a French naval admiral.  It is said that French ships on the Gironde were required to lower their sails in respect as they went past.  This act – baisse voile – in French led to the name Beychevelle.

Region/Terroir:  Saint Julien

Grapes:  Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (31%), Cabernet Franc (5%), Petit Verdot (2%).

Soil:  Deep bed of gravel on subsoil of clay and sandstone.

Alcohol:  14% VOL

Wine making:  The vines have an average age of 30 years.  Grapes are harvested by hand.  Fermentation occurs in stainless steel and epoxy-lined temperature controlled vats at 30°C.  In the January following harvest, wines are selected for the Grand Vin and the Amiral.  The Amiral is aged for 18 months in one-year-old barrels previously used for the Château Beychevelle, and 15% new barrels.  There is no filtration prior to bottling, leaving the wine with its original texture and substance.

Our Tasting notes:  Clearly identifiable to Château Beychevelle: soft, elegant and fruity with excellent character. The nose is lifted with red fruit, tobacco and some meaty notes.  Big chalky powerful tannins but good acid balance and length.

Single bottles, multiple bottles or complete boxes (18 x 375ml  bottles) may be ordered.
