Product Description
Château Rouget is situated in the heart of Pomerol. The 18th century château is in a park of oak and pine trees. It has been owned since 1992 by the Labruyere family, who renovated the vineyard, winery and cellars.
Region/Terroir: Pomerol
Grapes: Merlot (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%).
Soil: Sand and gravel with an underlying layer of iron deposits.
Alcohol: 14%
Wine making: Grapes are harvested, as late as possible, by hand into baskets, then separated for a final selection. In order to refine plot selection, fermentation occurs in small wooden vats and some temperature controlled steel vats. , Malolactic fermentation occurs in oak barrels. Ageing occurs in oak barrels, 50% of which are renewed each vintage, for 15-18 months.
Cellaring: Drinking well now but will keep for decades!
Our Tasting notes:
Jancis Robinson gave it a score of 16/20 - “Bright, dark crimson. Meaty nose and very rich, ripe purple aromas. Super smooth.”
Robert Parker (Wine Spectator) 91 Points: Similar in style to the 2008 Bon Pasteur, the dark ruby/plum-colored 2008 Rouget is unquestionably a sleeper of the vintage. Notes of mulberries, black currants and sandy, loamy soil as well as a lush, seductive, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and good purity as well as depth suggest it can be drunk now and over the next decade or more.
