Product Description

90 Points from Ralph Kyte Powell The Age Epicure/Good Food April 2013. "A mature, earthy red Bordeaux from Listrac-Medoc. Light jammy plum, black fruit and cedar aromas have more succulent appeal and less rustic qualities than many. The palate is dry and savoury with firm tannins"

Winsor Dobbin Winsors Choice May 2013: "Affordable mature Bordeaux from a very good producer in the Listrac-Medoc appellation? Tick. A blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon and 50% merlot from hand-tended vines farmed using organic methods and hand-picked? Tick. The use of 30% new oak that has been impressively integrated? Tick. Soft, complex and round, this is a wine of great length and elegance with not the slightest hint of greeness. Its quality puts to shame many bigger-name Bordeauxs at double, even triple, the price. This is drinking beautifully now and no doubt for some years to come. Stock up on a case if you afford to do so"

Chris Shanahan The Canberra Times July 2013, "An elegant 50/50 blend of merlot and cabernet, it offers ripened berry flavours, cut through with sturdy but round tannins-of an all-pervasive style that we never see in Australian cabernet-merlot blends, and which  indeed , defines the "claret style".

At one time there was only one large Château Semeillan, which was one of the oldest and most important growths in Listrac Médoc.  In 1932 Château Semeillan was classified Crus Bourgeois from Listrac Médoc.  After the death of the owner, Monsieur Holstein, in 1938, the domain was divided among his three daughters, the ladies Mazeau, Balleu and Bibian.  Thus arose Château Semeillan Mazeau.

Region/Terroir:  Médoc-sub region Listrac Médoc.

The elevated position of Château Semeillan Mazeau with westerly winds has a great advantage because there is no need to use chemicals in the handling of the vineyards. Since 2004 it bears the certificate "Agriculture raisonnée" (biologic/organic), certifying the use of organic practices.  The 14 hectares of vines have an average age of 30 years.

Grapes:  Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (50%).

Soil:  The vineyard of Semeillan Mazeau is located on the gravely plateau of the Champ de la Grêle, the highest point in the Médoc.

Alcohol:  12.5% VOL

Wine making:  Grapes picked by hand.  Fermentation occurs at low temperatures in stainless steel, temperature controlled vats.  Malolactic fermentation occurs partially in new oak barrels.  The wine is aged in 30% new oak for 18 months.

Cellaring potential:  A wine that will achieve full maturity a decade from the vintage, but which enjoys such balance that it can be enjoyed in its youth.

Our Tasting notes:  Color of well-ripened cherries. The nose is lifted with red fruits, spices and aromas of vanilla & chocolate. There are also some floral notes (violets). The palate is complex with roasted notes of dry fruits, hazelnut and fresh almond, typical of good Cabernet Sauvignon of Médoc.  Merlot brings finer, flowery, spicy and mineral (silica) notes, as well as chocolate. The whole is enveloped in a sensation of roundness/fullness in the mouth. The finish is long and balanced with finesse that suggests the wine will keep for many years.  The tannins have become softened and well integrated.

Try with lamb or roasted white meats

A wonderful wine at an affordable price.
