Product Description

“Villebois is getting a reputation for aromatically intense, pure, bone-dry sauvignon blanc made from these unique Loire appellations,” says winemaker Thierry Merlet.  “Ironically, my passion for this precise style of wine originates from my time in Australia at Petaluma and my love for the zesty, clean riesling from the Clare and Eden Valley.”

While Merlet finished his wine education both in Burgundy and Bordeaux he specialised in producing sauvignon blanc wines in the US and Australia.  He worked the 2000 and 2001 vintages at Petaluma in the Adelaide Hills under chief winemaker Con Moshos. ‘I learnt some of the key white winemaking techniques that I still use in the Loire today to craft Villebois' sauvignon blanc. After becoming familiar with Petaluma’s approach, I was eager to apply these techniques in my Loire Valley in France.”

For the past 15 years it has been Thierry Merlet’s ambition to create a global benchmark for authentic Loire sauvignon blanc wines.

Villebois controls more than 75 HA of vines in the heart of the Loire Valley and sells its wines under the prestigious Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé and Touraine appellations.

Grapes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc (from carefully selected mature vineyards in Touraine).

Wine making: The vines have developed a root system that spreads through the layers of flint and clay to reach the limestone (tuffeau) structure. The yields are carefully controlled under the AOC regulations.

Pre-fermentation maceration results in a wonderful aromatic structure. 70% of the juice is fermented in new oak barrels for four months, with accompanying batonnage (stirring of the lees).

Our Tasting notes: Full sauvignon blanc sensory spectrum of fresh fruited bouquet of subtle vegetal grapefruit and gooseberry aromas coupled with a refreshing mineral palate and long crisp finish. Classy!

Alcohol: 11.5% VOL

Single bottles, multiple bottles or complete boxes (6 bottles) can be ordered.

Reviews: Gold Medal Concours International Gilbert & Gaillard. Bronze Medal International Wine Challenge.

This was one of the standout wines at the Vinexpo wine exhibition in Bordeaux. It offers value for money and exquisite drinking. Just drink on its own, enjoy with a pre-dinner platter or seafood and white meats.

Our friends the winewankers liked it too!
