$35.00

Stock: Out Of Stock

Product Code: 10118/12

A great value Bordeaux red. It is made with the same meticulous care and methods as for the Grands Crus Classés wines of Bordeaux. But it's from the hidden gem of Saint Macaire one of the sub-regions of Bordeaux. It's the kind of great tasting, great value French bargain we search out on our buying trips. We were so pleased to find this one and its matching white !

Product Description

Created in 1985 by Peter Sichel to prove that it was possible to apply the same meticulous care and methods as for the Grands Crus Classés of Bordeaux to less prestigious terroirs to obtain a fine, expressive, fresh and fruity wine at an affordable price. Peter Sichel chose to illustrate the label with the Dog Star, Sirius, after the brightest star in the night sky.

Region/Terroir:  AOC Bordeaux. Canton de Saint Macaire, Bordeaux.  150 hectares.  The vineyards are mainly on clay-limestone soils and are located along the banks of the Garonne River.

Grapes:   60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Average age of vines - 30 years.

Alcohol:  13.5% VOL

Winemaking techniques:  The majority of the grapes are vinified in the traditional Bordeaux way: the bunches are totally de-stemmed and the grapes fermented, in vat, at between 27° and 32°C to extract colour and tannins. There follows a period of vatting (15-21 days) to give the wines their characteristic Bordeaux structure and the potential to age well. To maximize the fruit, however, the remaining portion of grapes undergoes carbonic maceration. Once the different vats are blended, Sirius is aged in French oak barriques for 12 months.

When to drink:  Enjoy from 2015 - 2020

Our tasting notes: Sirius 2012 is a brooding, almost black colour with ruby tints. The bouquet is expressive and intense, redolent of ripe blackcurrant and redcurrant and mild spice, with an elegant touch of vanilla and toast.  Elegant tannins wrapped in creamy, fruit.  It is fresh on a palate and is both balanced and mouth-fillingly aromatic.  This is a wine with huge personality. Crisp, textured, lingering finish.

Craig said: ”We have tasted a lot of Bordeaux reds at this price point.  This is excellent value for money and is drinking so well“.
