Product Description

This a rare and prestigious wine, which in recent years has won many awards, and has a long and fantastic history!

The village of Saint-Mont is situated on a hill dominating the Adour Valley and is known to have existed since the end of the 6th century. A monastery was founded in the 11th century by Raymond de Saint-Mont. In 1055 the monastery became part of the order of Cluny. From that point the wineries of Saint-Mont developed. A number of documents testify that the Benedictines worked the vines and made wines which were transported in barrels on the Adour River, below the monastery and exported to Holland and the United Kingdom from the 14th to the 15th century. The fame of the vineyards was spread by pilgrams walking the Compostella de Santiago.

After some investigation to locate the parcels of land used for grapes from the Benedictine period, the Producteurs Plaimont have recreated the vineyards of Monastère de Saint-Mont with six vignerons!

In 2002, 2005 and 2006 this wine won 2 stars and a "coup de coeur" (literally our favorite) rating in the prestigious Guide Hachette (2009 edition). Again this wine from 2010 was awarded 2 stars.

Terroir:  In the village of Saint-Mont, spread over 7.5 hectare. A mixture of clay, limestone and sand. The majority of parcels are planted on clay-limestone which gives grapes of the best ageing potential. In addition they are south facing confering an ability to ripen well and producing beautiful complex aromatiques.

Grape-varieties: Tannat 70%, Pinenc 20%, Cabernet Franc 10%

Tasting Notes: We have translated the notes on this wine from the Guide Hachette (2009).
"In its 2010 version, this wine has a stunning black cherry colour. The nose, flattering and intense, is fruity with (blackcurrant, blackberry, morello cherry), with pleasurable nuances of spices. In the mouth it is well structured, concentrated, with nice tannins bringing an extra structure and complexity. Perfect with a honey duck breast, today or in two or three years."

A fabulous wine, now hitting its straps. It has integrated fruit and tannins and is wonderfully layered and complex. We are very pleased to have an allocation of this wine and to bring it to wine-lovers in Australia.
