January Newsletter

Ahhh, the peace and quiet of January - end of year breakups, Christmas parties, Christmas itself and New Year celebrations all ticked off for another year! Phew, I'm exhausted just thinking about it, so best I pull out an ice cold bottle of my favourite wine in summer ..... of course rosé.  Whether it be the dusky pink rosé from Provence (La Croix Irresistible) or the fuller bodied, deeper rosé from Bergerac (La Rayre), I really don't mind, as both are delicious in this heat!

Fortunately Christmas Day was cooler and subsequently we dined on our patio, or should I say as the French do, terrace (terrace sounds so much better thanpatio!) looking out over the magnificent Leneva Valley.  We enjoyed some local turkey and some magnificently cooked glazed ham (thanks for the new barbie Santa!).  The weather, and the food was ideally matched with a bottle (or two...) of Château Semeillan Mazeau from the Bordeaux sub-region of Listrac Medoc on the banks of the Gironne estuary.  We couldn't have found a better match for the Christmas fare on offer for our main course.  Dessert was either a lovely pav with local berries, and/or plum pudding ice-cream from up the valley at Gundowring - both perfectly matched with Château Jolys Cuvée Jean from Jurançon.  This is such a great wine that the sommeliers at Vue de Monde, Bistro Vue, Trocadero and Stokehouse have discovered with very good reason and are serving by the glass.  It is so well priced ($22 for 375mls and $32 for 750mls) for this beautiful dessert wine made from gros and petit manseng grapes in the foothills of the Pyrennees, with a beautiful dryness on the finish.

But we can't rest on our sun lounges for too long as our December shipment of wine is in storage and needs to be sorted - see our next newsletter for these new additions ..... and some new vintages of some old favourites.

DiscoverVin Wine Reviews:

Domaine du Crampilh, Madiran, 2006 - Review by The Vinsomniac, 7th January 2012. Read review

..... Sounds a rather stunning place (Pyrenees Mountain Range), if a little wild, somewhat contrasting with the smooth and glass-like intro this wine provides. Plenty of tapenade and herb on the palate. Brown spices and black licorice - but, some sweeter accents too, rose and black fruits. 89 points.

DiscoverVin Blog:

6th January 2013 - DiscoverVin Top 10 wines for 2012

........ The following makes some interesting reading, none the least for the prominence of rosé. Two rosé wines have made the top 10! Once considered sweet and uninteresting, dry rosé certainly appears to be making a resurgence in Australia as it is in Europe. In France in 2012, rosé sales have exceeded white wine sales. Similarly we appear to be in the middle of a rosé revolution!

Here are the first 5 of our top 10 wines for 2012. We will blog about wines 6-10 next week. READ MORE
